The South Carolina Democratic Women’s Council Hall Of Fame Award

The SCDWC is now accepting nominations for their Hall of Fame Award for 2008. The Award is given annually and will be presented at the SCDW Fall Forum. The SCDWC Hall of Fame Award Committee for 2008 is Cindy Floyd, Charleston (Chair); Brena Walker, Anderson; Rita Smith, Georgetown; Marilyn Summers, Richland and Goldie Randle, Aiken.

Deadlines: Nominations for the awards will be received until May 15, 2008.
The Committee shall meet and report selection to the President by June 30, 2008.

Criteria: The nominations will be confined to women who are known active Democrats or who have served the Party well.
Posthumous nominees are acceptable.
Demonstrated excellence in her performance and affiliation with the SC Democratic Party and/or the SC Democratic Women’s Council.
Made significant contributions in work and leadership to the SC Democratic Party and the SCDWC.
Made major contributions that have continuing impact in the party, the state, the local party and community.
Has shown leadership, motivational qualities, loyalty and dedication.
Has opened opportunities for women.

Background: The Hall of Fame Award was initiated in 2005. The following outstanding women have been recognized from 2005-2007:

Selma H. Conyers, Williamsburg County (former county chair) and Marcia Duffy, Richland County (former state party Treasurer). Posthumous awards were made to Alice Cicenia, Dorchester County (former state Executive Committee and county party chair); Elise Curtis, Aiken County (party volunteer over 50 years); Elizabeth Woolbright, Oconee County (party volunteer over 50 years); Honorable Mary Gordon Ellis, Jasper County (first woman elected to SC General Assembly); Honorable Nancy Stevenson, Charleston County (first woman SC Lt Governor). Carol Khare Fowler, Richland County (DNC member and co-chair of DNC Rules Committee, SCDP 2nd Vice Chair); Irene Rudnick, Aiken County (former member SC House of Representatives and trail blazer); and Inez Tenenbaum, Lexington County (former Superintendent of Education). Posthumous award was made to Ammie Murray, Lexington County (labor and civil rights activist). Sally P. Howard, Horry County (former county chair); Maxie W. Duke, Oconee County (party activist and trail blazer); Kleonickie Stathakis, Anderson County (party activist and avid campaigner); Joanne Montague, Greenville County (tireless campaigner for Equal Rights and women candidates).

A large plaque is on display in the SC Democratic Headquarters office that posts the names for posterity along with a picture and write-up.
